It was a day like any other. I slept in past my alarm, showered and found the best all-black ensemble I could with my half-unlaundered wardrobe. We loaded ourselves in the car for a “road trip” to a land known as wine country with an invitation in hand for an experience that would leave us forever changed: The Woodinville Wine Country Warehouse District.
Turns out, we’d gone a quarter of our lives without experiencing the enchantment known as a “wine walk” filled with the best wines that the Pacific Northwest has to offer in the comfort of our own backyard.
The Woodinville Wine Country Half Marathon was an event that encompassed two of the best activities that life has to offer: running and wine. Participants had the opportunity to work for their reward over a course that spanned from Woodinville to Bothell and concluded in the scenic Redmond countryside. The real party started after the half marathon with the Wine and Music Festival followed by the optional Race Finishers Wine Walk in the Warehouse District of Woodinville Wine Country.
Over the course of several hours, we tasted and sipped the deepest reds alongside the sweetest Rose, followed by some of the most robust white wine our lips had ever tasted. There was a mix of folks enjoying the secret haven, from young 20-somethings to established professionals carting out cases worth more than our paychecks.
I asked John Patterson, the owner of Patterson Winery, if they Warehouse District was normally this full on a Saturday. “Oh yeah,” he said, “this is normal.” I continued to sip and we wondered out loud why we hadn’t known about this sooner.
Wine tasting is one thing, but wine tasting over from over two dozen established wineries in the comfort of a single area is an absolute treat that is not to be missed. And for our fellow runners out there – this is a half marathon experience that can’t be beat. For more information about how you can take part in a half marathon experience unlike any other, check out Destination Races, an organization committed to bringing half marathons to a whole new level in unique locations across North America. And for our local friends, get yourself to the Warehouse District in Woodinville Wine Country, like yesterday. Happy tasting!
